Common Ground was founded in 1993 by Liz Winfeld. Liz holds a Bachelor of Arts in English/Communications and a Master’s Degree in Education.

She has garnered a reputation as a premier speaker and writer on issues of workforce diversity with a particular emphasis on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace. Liz is a nationally recognized expert on domestic partner benefits’ implementation, transsexual transition planning and education, and in transgender health benefits. She also works extensively with employee resource groups focused on these areas of diversity.

Liz is the author of “Straight Talk About Gays in the Workplace” now it in its third edition from The Haworth Press, Inc. This third edition has been significantly updated to reflect new ideas and content elements. Specifically, this third edition goes much farther in explaining workplace education regarding sexual orientation and, for the first time, includes detailed information about gender identity workplace issues as well.

“Straight Talk About Gays in the Workplace” was named a “Best Business Book of the Year” by the American Library Association.

Liz is also lead author and editor of A Trainer's Guide to Training Tough Topics. It’s a “how-to”, blow-by-blow collection of diversity education curriculum on topics ranging from sexual orientation to gender identity, people with disabilities and more.

A Trainer’s Guide to Training Tough Topics was released by AMACOM in 2001 and its first printing sold out. The Guide is now available as an "on-demand" printing from the AMA. Dr. Alice Adams is Common Ground’s gender expert. She has been a professor of gender studies for more than fifteen years. Her main area of interest is in how scientific ideas about gender, race, and sexuality have been used and misused in workplace and educational settings. Alice offers a new, exciting perspective to this area of workplace diversity, and her expertise is already at work at organizations wishing to improve their recruitment and retention efforts on the basis of attaining and maintaining gender balance in the workplace. Author of two books and of a number of articles and reviews too numerous to list here, Alice is currently at work on a third book, “Gender Affinities: Finding Common Ground Between the Sexes”. In addition to her work with Common Ground, Alice directs the Gender Studies Program for the University of Maine. She is a former Fellow at Cambridge University, England, winner of a Rockefeller Fellowship and also a Mellon instructional Technologies’ Grant winner. Alice holds a Ph. D from the University of Iowa.
